The West Virginia University Feature Twirler auditions are comprised of two audition "rounds." The first audition is a videotape submission, with a submission deadline of Thursday, February 14th. Tapes should be sent to the WVU Band office. There is no required routine for this video. Each candidate should place on this video those routines and/or twirling material that they feel best represents their abilities.
*Please note! Videos taken at other performances (i.e., competitions, marching band field performances, etc.) are allowed, but please be sure that these show your twirling ability as an individual (solo) twirler, not just within a corps or team. Please also be sure that any performance video is of a clear, easy‑to‑view quality.
The candidate's contact information (e-mail, mailing address, & phone number) should also be included with the video submission.
Videos will be judged, and from these results, candidates will be selected and invited to a second audition - which will be held at the WVU campus on the morning of Saturday, April 5th. The basis for selection and invitation to the second audition is that the candidate shows in their video the potential to twirl at the college level in a large stadium atmosphere. Please send your video to the following address:

When invited to the second audition, candidates will receive more detailed information about how to prepare. However, for the second audition, candidates will be asked to perform their solo routine (one baton) and then a second routine (multiple baton) of their choice in front of a panel of judges. There is no time limit placed on either of these routines. The audition will be held outside (weather permitting) or inside in a very large university gymnasium (The WVU Shell Building). Areas that are considered in judging include: showmanship, speed, difficulty, poise/balance, variety and "showiness" or visibility (that is, will the work "show" in a large football stadium?).
Twirlers who have previously twirled for the WVU Marching Band are required to audition each year. Thus, the twirling positions are open each year. Based on the judges recommendation, up to four twirlers may be selected to twirl with the WVU Band.
General questions about the auditions (i.e., videotape submissions, deadlines, etc...) should be directed to the WVU Band office (304-293-4841 ext. 3154). For “technical” questions (concerning routines, etc...) please contact Dr. Paula Jo Stout, Twirling Coordinator, WVU Marching Band (
