2011 Season Scholarship Opportunities

Kappa Kappa Psi is proud to offer four scholarships, each worth $500, to the members of the WVU Bands. Two scholarships are presented in the fall semester, as well as two presented in the spring semester. The first is the Andrea Smith Memorial Scholarship which is presented to an outstanding freshman marching band member. This scholarship was created in honor of a member of the band who passed in the early 1990’s. Freshmen are chosen on the basis of many of the outstanding characteristic Andrea Smith herself possessed: respect, dedication, leadership, and PRIDE. The next scholarship is the Frank “Doc” Stevens Memorial Scholarship which was named in honor of a longtime friend and announcer of the Pride of West Virginia. This award is presented to a four-year senior member of the band who is exhibited leadership, persistence, and of course, PRIDE.

In the spring, we offer the Don Wilcox Band Scholarship as well as our newest scholarship the George Saari Scholarship. The Don Wilcox Band Scholarship is in honor of our extraordinary band director emeritus. This award is presented to a member of the WVU concert ensembles (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Symphony) who exhibits outstanding musical leadership within the group. Lastly, the George Saari Scholarship will be awarded to a member of any of the WVU music ensembles to help further their musical enrichment. Students who are participating in activities such as DCI, WGI, indoor percussion or guard ensembles, music camps, and other related events would be eligible for this award.

To apply for any of these awards, eligible members simply need to fill out an application and go through an interview with a panel of their peers. Those chosen for the Andrea Smith and Frank “Doc” Stevens scholarships will be presented with their awards during the annual band banquet. It is a great honor to be chosen for any of these awards.
